The mind is only one and you can only engage it in one place at a time. If you engage it in the material world, be it in your father, mother, brother, wife, wealth, name or fame then simultaneously, you cannot engage it in devotion of God. You can continue reading spiritual books, performing japa, singing devotional songs, and so on, but with your mind attached to the mayic world, all these practices will be fruitless. So long as you are not detached from the world, how can your mind be attached to God?

In the beginning one must have faith, then he will be interested to seek the association of a Guru. Afterwards he will practice devotion under his guidance. Proper faith and a proper Guru can lead to the attainment of the goal.

इन्द्रियों द्वारा किया हुआ संग लाभप्रद नहीं होता। मन का ही संग सच्चा सत्संग है , क्योंकि बंधन एवं मोक्ष का कारण केवल मन है अन्य कुछ नहीं।

One who aspires for divine love should aim to be more humble than a blade of grass and more forbearing than a tree. Believe all to be superior to oneself and believe oneself to be the most sinful of all. This feeling will destroy ego and give rise to true humility; only then will the mind and heart be purified.
